It turned out, that regular coffee drinking prolongs life. At that, at great numbers it is most useful just for the heart. The probability for dying of cardiovascular diseases among coffee-lovers, who drink more than 4 cups per day, is less than 25% or even 40%, especially pronounced effect for men.
Extensive study of coffee influence on a mortality, where during a quarter of a century have taken part over 125 thousand of people, showed that people who had drunk more coffee have the most lowest dying risk of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover it does not matter whether coffee was full or decaffeinated.
Research people under the direction of Esther Lopez-Garcia of the Autonomous University of Madrid have taken an advantage of data from this extensive study about the impact of diet on mortality. Since 1980 till 2004, 84 214 women every two years have regularly reported to scientists about their habits in eating and drinking. In particular, they reported and the number of drunk coffee. Since 1986, else 41,736 men joined them. Participants of the study, who one and all were medical professions, have neither cancer nor heart diseases.
Results were summed up in 2004. By the end of the experiment have been died 18 thousands of participants – more than 11 thousands of women, and nearly 7 thousands of men. The cause of death for almost half of the women and about 35% of men was cancer. Cardiovascular diseases have killed around 20% of women and 30% of men.
After careful selection of other factors that may affect mortality, such as smoking, alcohol abuse and predilection for fatty foods, scientists were able to determine what contribution makes coffee on mortality.
This contribution turned out negative.
Among women who drank two to three cups of coffee per day, the death probability of heart disease was less at 25%, drank four to five cups of coffee – at 34%. The scientists had no success to observe neither positive nor negative impact on the development of cancer. Since cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of death, then the total mortality with the use of coffee was declined.
The results among men were even more encouraged – the more coffee they drank, the longer they managed to survive. For those study participants who rarely did without 5 cups of coffee per day, the death probability of cardiovascular diseases decreased by 44%! At that, there was not again discovered any relation to the development of cancer.
Cautious researchers, whose results were published in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine, are warning against too literal interpretation of these results. There is no need run to Barista and order ten cups at one draught.
First, the quantity of coffee was valued confessedly. And while they all were related to medicine, and therefore hardly to lie about their predilection to colleagues, it is impossible to exclude the possibility of inaccuracies in such the reports.
Secondly, like in all such studies, correlation does not prove cause-effect relation between two activities. Perhaps, the good health of itself as something related to the human desire to drink coffee, and perhaps invigorating drink to drink more precisely those who have to work so much that once and die.
Third, according to the authors of the latest work, previous studies as for this have shown different results. And while the authors of any of the previous works can not boast of such mass of participants or its duration, as Lopez-Garcia and her colleagues, independent confirmation is still needed.
Finally, the physiological causes, which could help to understand why coffee suddenly proved useful for the heart, were also not established. It is well-known that caffeine raises blood pressure quickly and thus only accelerates the cardiac muscle wear. So, this component is unlikely to have a positive effect – especially since, according to the results of Lopez-Garcia studies, decaffeinated drink yield a little to natural products in terms of reducing mortality. It may protect the heart some other components of coffee, which produce long-term positive effect.
Therefore, there is no need to abuse this drink.
By the way, in other article in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry turned it out, that if you want to invigorate, it is not always necessary to drink coffee. Its aroma itself can cause alterations of making albumens in the brain, changing the expression of at least 17 genes, which usually respond to the coffee.
